MLC Child Actor, TAYLOR SPIRES, is also in New York for the summer. She is working hard and having a GREAT TIME! Taylor had a callback with Nickelodeon today and was recently placed “on hold” for AMERICAN GIR…L DOLL and TARGET printwork.

What it means to be “ON HOLD” or “RIGHT of FIRST REFUSAL”…
At some point or another, hopefully an actor/model gets the call from their booker/agency saying, “Casting would like to put you on hold for (name of project) on (dates of wardrobe/shoot).”
There are several important things to know about that one small sentence.
First off -different casting directors may use different terms for the same meaning. Instead of “on hold” they may say “Check Avail” or “put a pin in” or… while I’m sure there are many others – the technical term for this is “Right of First Refusal”.
To put someone on a “right of first refusal” is much simpler than it sounds. Basically after the audition and callbacks are over for any project (TV, Film, Theatre, Commercial, and Industrial) the client narrows down the list of auditions to a select few they’d possibly choose to award the part to. The client is the director or writer or producer or ad agency or theatre…. the list goes on and on. So “hold” or “first refusal” means, you’ve made that short list and they want to make sure you have no conflict for that time period. Once you agree to holding those dates, you cannot take another job, travel, or anything else until you find out if you’ve been booked or not.
Some people are put “on hold” for MANY projects and continuously released (meaning someone else got the role)… HOWEVER, “on hold” is still a great thing! Directors come back and ad agencies work on more than one commercial… the casting directors have PHENOMENAL memories and will remember who clients seem to choose for callbacks/holds/bookings and will make sure an actor/model is on the audition list…. the more auditions you have, the more holds it can lead to, and eventually, you’ll BOOK IT! Being released from your hold doesn’t necessarily reflect on your performance, it can be as simple as they’ve cast the role of your sister and she and the woman playing your mother are both blonde with blue eyes and therefore, you (the dark, handsome type) don’t match as well as the other guy “on hold”.
